There was no "/var/run/ntpd.pid" file defined in "/etc/sysconfig/ntpd". The problem has been solved after setting as below: #OPTIONS="-g" OPTIONS="-x -g -p /var/run/ntpd.pid" Additional note: NTP has been replaced by Chrony(new feature) in Oracle Linux 7.
